Even though we didn’t start RVing until our mid 40s, we’ve learned a lot about how to keep our RV in great condition over the past few years. RVs can be a big investment, so it’s important to take good care of them if you want them to last. Here are our top tips for keeping your RV humming for years to come:
Stay On Top of Maintenance
The best way to extend the life of your RV is to follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule religiously. That means getting oil changes, inspections, fluid flushes, filter changes, etc done on time, every time. Don’t skip scheduled maintenance because you think you can’t afford it or don’t have time – it will cost you more in the long run.
In addition to scheduled maintenance, also pay attention to any small issues that crop up and get them addressed right away before they turn into bigger problems. For example, if you notice a small leak, unusual noise, or appliance not working properly, get it checked out immediately. Catching things early is much cheaper and easier than waiting until there is major damage.
Give It a Thorough Annual Inspection
Each spring before camping season starts, give your RV a thorough inspection from top to bottom. Check the roof and seals for any cracks or deterioration that could lead to leaks. Inspect slide outs for smooth operation and lubricate any moving parts. Test all appliances and fixtures for proper functioning. Check the underside for damage. Look for any loose screws or fasteners that need to be tightened. Fixing little things now prevents huge headaches later.
Keep It Clean
A clean RV lasts longer. Dirt, debris and moisture that builds up over time can lead to mold, damaged surfaces, and mechanical issues. Wash and wax the exterior regularly to protect the finish. Clean the interior frequently to prevent stains, mildew and excess dirt that can grind away at surfaces. Sanitize the fresh water system to keep it free of harmful bacteria and minerals. A little elbow grease goes a long way in maintenance.
Use Quality Products
When it comes to lubricants, filters, cleaners, sealants, and other maintenance products, don’t cheap out. Spend a little more for name brand, RV-specific products recommended by the manufacturer. They are specially formulated to be safe and effective for RVs. Off-the-shelf automotive products can actually do more harm than good in many cases.
Drive Carefully
Your driving habits impact your RV’s longevity. Avoid potholes and curbs that can damage the chassis, wheels or underbelly. Be cautious of low-hanging branches and awnings that can scratch or gouge the exterior. Start and stop gradually – don’t jackrabbit the acceleration or braking. Following posted speed limits reduces strain on the engine and transmission. And take corners and turns slowly to avoid shifting cargo. Preventative care on the road prevents big repair bills later.
Watch Environmental Factors
Mother Nature can wreak havoc on an RV if you’re not careful. Avoid parking under trees that can dump sap, leaves or corrosive bird droppings onto your rig. Angle the RV to divert water away from slide outs and doors to prevent rain leakage and rusting. Use tire covers, roof protectants and wax to guard against UV damage. Be mindful of where and how you park – the environment plays a huge role in deterioration.
Maintain Proper Tire Pressure
Under-inflated or over-inflated tires wear out faster, impact handling, and are more prone to blowouts. Check tire pressures before each trip to maximize their life. Invest in a tire pressure monitoring system so you’re alerted to any leaks immediately. Rotate tires as recommended to equalize wear and tear. Replace tires once they reach the end of their safe life as indicated by wear bars. Proper inflation is hugely important.
By sticking to these maintenance tips, your RV can stay in like-new condition and provide many years and miles of reliable service. A well-cared-for rig holds its value better too when it comes time to upgrade. Don’t let the initial investment in your RV go to waste – a little TLC goes a long way!
