As seasoned RV campers now in our 50s, we’ve discovered the importance of finding ways to hold onto the memories from our travels. RVing has allowed us to explore this beautiful country, visit small towns and big cities, and create lasting experiences. But the destinations and sights flit by quickly through the windshield. Without intentionally capturing memories, the richness of the journey can be lost.

Over the years, we’ve found several simple yet meaningful ways to keep the memories of places we’ve visited alive. These practices have helped us reflect on the growth, joy, and wonder we’ve experienced on the road. And they’ve enabled us to share the adventure with others too.

One fun ritual we have is buying a magnet representing each locale and sticking it on our RV refrigerator. It sounds simple, but gazing at that eclectic magnetic collage sparks vivid recollections of our trips. We remember how excited we were to find the perfect magnet symbolizing the park or nearby city we visited. When we walk by the fridge each morning, seeing that magnet transports us right back to the natural beauty of each park or the sights and shops of the nearby quaint, small towns.

Another way to memorialize your RVing trips is by purchasing a sticker for each destination and adhering it to the back of your rig. As you drive along the open road, others can enjoy glancing at the stickers from your past journeys plastered across the rear. It’s a rolling record of the places you’ve been. Stickers with landmarks like the Golden Gate Bridge, Mount Rushmore, and the St. Louis Arch can memorialize your visits. Stickers for national parks like Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon can conjure up memories of jaw-dropping scenery and hikes.

The most meaningful activity for preserving RV trip memories is keeping a handwritten travel journal. Each night you can take time to write out highlights, thoughts, and reflections from that day’s experiences. Recording your impressions in the moment immerses you right back in the places you visited. You can describe quirky roadside attractions, write about meaningful conversations with locals, note funny mishaps, and memorialize emotional reactions you had to powerful sights. These travel journals are filled with the authentic nuggets often lost to time. But jotting down these travel accounts lets you relive once-in-a-lifetime moments years later.

When you reread a journal passage about the awe of staring up at the redwoods, you’re transported right back to walking among the giants in awe. No matter how far away in time, the sights, sounds and feelings from your RV journeys are captured vividly on these handwritten pages. The tangible journal provides a personal record of growth, wonder, and joy.

RVing has allowed us to see pieces of America we never imagined we’d visit. But places and events slip away so quickly. Chasing after the next destination or adventure could mean losing the richness of what we’ve experienced. By taking simple steps to memorialize each locale – buying magnets and stickers, and keeping a travel journal – one is able to hold onto the memories that make this nomadic lifestyle so rewarding. These practices also allow us to share the indelible experiences from my RV voyages with friends and family back home. Moments spent camping under the stars in the Badlands or watching an ethereal sunset in the Smoky Mountains stay fresh and alive thanks to these memory keeping habits. The destination stickers, quirky magnets, and cherished journals are both sentimental and practical ways to commemorate the adventure, growth, and joy that RVing has brought into our life. They help ensure the journey itself is fondly remembered.
